Erling Haaland remains one of Real Madrid’s prime transfer targets. Recent developments indicate that the Norwegian striker’s current contract includes "secret clauses" that may open the door for a future transfer.
Haaland, currently 25, recently set another Champions League milestone. By scoring against his former club Borussia Dortmund last Wednesday, he became the first player to score in five consecutive Champions League matches representing three different clubs.
This goal also increased his total to 18 goals this season after just 14 games across all competitions – a remarkable level of consistency showing no signs of decline.
Few clubs worldwide do not dream of having Haaland, but whenever rumors about his future arise, Real Madrid and Barcelona are always the first names mentioned. According to journalist Graeme Bailey from TBR Football, Haaland’s contract with Manchester City still contains clauses that could allow him to leave Etihad in the future.
Erling Haaland continues his outstanding goal-scoring form with a goal in Man City’s 4-1 Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund
"Initially, Man City sources claimed that the new contract lasting until 2034 removed previous release clauses. However, sources close to Haaland, as well as from Barcelona and Real Madrid, believe some clauses remain. Remember, every major contract Haaland has signed includes special clauses," Bailey said.
Bailey added: "We don’t expect Haaland to leave within the next 18 months. Barcelona also recognize that he is likely to stay at Man City at least until after 2026. Haaland remains their ideal long-term target, but currently, he is fully focused on this season. So, nothing urgent now, but in about 18 months, this could become a hot topic. Indeed, my sources confirm those contract clauses could be crucial for his future".
One factor that could impact this transfer future is Vinicius Junior’s case. The Brazilian forward is a top target for Saudi Pro League clubs amid rumors of a strained relationship with Real Madrid’s head coach Xabi Alonso. If Real Madrid agrees to sell Vinicius, it could free budget to bring Haaland to the Bernabeu in the coming years.
This aligns with journalist Dean Jones’s comments to TEAMtalk: "Haaland is truly a long-term target for Real Madrid, but this is not a deal expected to be completed by the end of this season. Probably by 2027, Haaland’s consideration of a new club will be clearer. Currently, he seems very happy at Man City and determined to win more trophies, especially after the club’s recent difficult period".
Jones also highlighted that Haaland enjoys a great relationship with coach Pep Guardiola and is fully comfortable living in Manchester. He acknowledged Real Madrid as a fitting long-term destination, but Barcelona is unlikely to compete financially.
Meanwhile, according to TEAMtalk sources, Man City is still interested in right-back Ivan Fresneda from Sporting CP. The 21-year-old is also closely watched by Chelsea and West Ham, having shown stable form with 13 appearances this season for the Portuguese team.
Additionally, Man City is reportedly willing to sell defender Nathan Ake for about £25 million in the January transfer window. Crystal Palace, Everton, and Fulham are among those interested in the Dutch international.
