Coach Ruben Amorim brought disappointing news to Manchester United supporters, confirming that the new forward Benjamin Sesko injured his knee in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham in the Premier League's 11th round on November 8th evening.
The match in London was full of drama. Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring for Man United in the 30th minute. In the second half, the home team pushed hard and equalized through Mathys Tel. The final moments were tense: Richarlison seemed to have secured victory for Spurs with an accidental header against Man United, but defender Matthijs de Ligt heroically scored a powerful header from Bruno Fernandes’ corner in injury time, securing a point for the visitors.
However, Man United’s joy was short-lived as Benjamin Sesko had to leave the field in stoppage time due to a knee injury. The Slovenian striker came on in the 58th minute to help the visitors seal the game. He had a good chance to put the team ahead 2-1 after Spurs equalized, but a crucial block by Micky van de Ven denied Sesko his third Premier League goal this season. It was during that collision that Sesko hurt his knee and had to limp off.
Since Man United had used all 5 substitutions, they had to play the final minutes with only 10 men on the pitch. After the match, coach Ruben Amorim expressed concern about the severity of the injury. When asked about Sesko’s form, who has scored only 2 goals in 11 matches in the Premier League, Amorim said:
“That’s not my biggest worry right now. For a striker, fluctuating form is normal. What concerns me more is his injury, especially since it affects the knee. You can’t take knee injuries lightly. We need Ben to help make the team stronger, but at the moment I don’t know the exact situation.”
The Portuguese coach was also asked whether Man United would need to sign another striker in the January transfer window, especially since both Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo will have to return to their national teams for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) starting in Morocco next month.
Amorim responded: “We have to consider everything. First, we need to assess Ben’s condition. When the transfer window opens, if there is an opportunity to strengthen the squad or solve problems, we will think about it. For now, the whole team must make the most of what we have.”
Both Amad and Mbeumo were involved in the opening goal against Tottenham, with Amad assisting Mbeumo’s finish. The Cameroonian striker was recently named Premier League Player of the Month for October, and his goal in London marked his fourth in the last four matches.
Regarding squad status, Man United has generally been fortunate this season with few major injuries. Before the trip to Tottenham, only Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo were absent. Martinez has not played since February due to a cruciate ligament injury but is expected to return this month. Meanwhile, Mainoo has a minor injury and was not in Amorim’s starting plans.
