Manchester United’s 20-year-old academy midfielder, Kobe Meno, missed out on the Premier League squad for the trip to Tottenham, officially due to an injury during training earlier in the week. Nevertheless, the English midfielder’s future remains very uncertain, having not started any Premier League matches so far, and he is expected to seek a move during the January transfer window.

Even if he weren’t injured, Meno would still find it difficult to break into the starting lineup under Ruben Amorim, which has been a persistent problem beyond just this season. It is widely believed that Meno’s style clashes with the Portuguese coach’s preferred 3-4-3 system. This formation demands midfielders to be highly industrious and versatile both offensively and defensively, whereas Meno’s game is more relaxed and elegant, favoring a leisurely approach on the pitch.
Besides his dissatisfaction with playing only 138 minutes in Premier League matches for Manchester United, Meno is also frustrated by his stalled contract renewal. His weekly wage of £35,000 is the lowest in the squad, and this situation does not seem likely to improve anytime soon.
Even if Meno stays with the club in January, his transfer saga is expected to continue next summer unless Amorim is replaced and Manchester United appoint a new manager who prefers a four-defender formation. It is reported that United are aware they may have to sell this once highly regarded academy talent and have set a psychological price range between £45 million and £50 million.
Serie A side Napoli has long been interested in Meno. Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Napoli has maintained regular contact with the Manchester United star’s agent, with a loan deal being the most likely option during the winter window. After the upcoming international break, Meno and his agent will enter negotiations with Manchester United to see if the club will accept this proposal. Undoubtedly, Meno is already attracted to the prospect of joining Napoli.

At Napoli, he would reunite with former teammates McTominay, Højlund, and previously Manchester United’s Lukaku, as well as Manchester City’s De Bruyne and other former Premier League players. According to the British newspaper The Sun, 28-year-old McTominay is particularly eager for his current club to sign this young Red Devils academy graduate.
Sources told British media: "Scott (McTominay) has already met with Conte and urged him to sign Kobe (Meno). He detailed Kobe’s strengths and his qualities as a player. Scott has known Kobe since their time at Manchester United and believes that whether on loan or a permanent transfer, Kobe will make a significant impact for the team. He thinks Kobe, having been trained in Manchester United’s academy from a young age, has received the right development and will quickly integrate into the squad, providing great benefits to Napoli."
34-year-old De Bruyne underwent thigh surgery last month and will be sidelined for an extended period, opening up a chance for Meno to secure a starting role. If he remains at Manchester United, he is unlikely to get many opportunities and may miss out on the England squad for the 2026 World Cup in North America. This week, Meno was not called up by Tuchel to the national team, leaving him with less and less time to prove himself.
Meno is also aware that Napoli has other options, such as Conte considering a €30 million bid for Barcelona’s Marc Casado. Therefore, if Manchester United’s new star does not push hard, he could lose this chance. Of course, he has other options too; British media report that at least 10 clubs are monitoring him, though most do not offer conditions as favorable as Napoli’s, who compete in the Champions League and are league title contenders.

Romano summarized: "We have to see what decision Manchester United will make regarding Meno. He wanted to be loaned out to get playing time as early as the end of August, and whether that wish will be fulfilled in January remains to be seen. Meno knows both Manchester United and Amorim want him to stay. I believe several factors will influence United’s choice. Their desired targets include Brighton’s Bissouma, who was a summer window goal but didn’t materialize. I think a January move is unlikely and will face many challenges."
