The Stadium of Light witnessed a frantic opening with plenty of early chances, as Chemsdine Talbi was denied within the first minute, setting the stage for Bournemouth to take the lead.

After just seven minutes, Antoine Semenyo’s cross found Evanilson, whose initial shot was deflected onto the post before Amine Adli reacted fastest to calmly finish his first PL goal.

Sunderland had performed well in the opening 15 minutes, but unfortunately found themselves two goals behind following a spectacular strike from Tyler Adams. The American international seized a loose ball in midfield and, with options around him, opted to shoot from inside the centre circle, delivering a stunning lob over a retreating Robin Roefs.

Unfazed, the Black Cats got back into the game on the half-hour mark when Reinildo Mandava was pushed down in the box by Alex Scott, awarding Enzo Le Fée a penalty, which he converted with an unstoppable strike to reduce the deficit.

The exciting contest continued after the break as Sunderland quickly equalised in the 46th minute, with a disguised pass from Granit Xhaka creating space for Bertrand Traoré to slot a low shot into the near post for his first goal with Sunderland.

Bournemouth briefly believed they had regained the lead, but Evanilson was offside when he poked in Semenyo’s deflected low cross on the goal line.

Both teams had numerous chances throughout, and the intense match showed no signs of calming as Sunderland took the lead from a corner, with substitute Brobbey heading in Le Fée’s corner in the 69th minute.

Andoni Iraola looked to his substitutes for answers, but ultimately there were no surprises as the home side held firm to claim all three points. Tempers boiled over at the end, with Lewis Cook sent off for an elbow, adding to Bournemouth’s woes as Sunderland secured the victory.

An incredible comeback ends Sunderland’s three-game winless run (D2, L1), propelling Régis Le Bris’ team back into the top four, defying pre-season predictions.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth have now lost five of their last eight PL away matches (W1, D2), enduring a third straight top-flight away defeat for the first time in two years. With just one win in six games (D2, L3), Iraola’s side drops to ninth place.
