Djibril Sow was the first to test his luck after a dull and interruption-filled opening 30 minutes, as the Swiss international’s instinctive shot narrowly flew over the bar. Overall, the first half will not be remembered as a remarkable chapter in this derby’s near century-long history.

And despite Sevilla dominating nearly two-thirds of possession before halftime, it was Betis who registered the first shot on target only 37 minutes in, when Abde Ezzalzouli broke through on goal and aimed at the near post, but the presence of José Angel Carmona slowed him down, allowing Odysseas Vlachodimos to push the ball wide.

Although Sevilla began the second half strongly, a swift counterattack following Peque Fernandez’s shot directly at Alvaro Valles proved crucial in giving Betis the lead.

Batista Mendy intercepted the ball, but a mistake leading to Pablo Fornals gave the Verdiblancos’ main creator time and space to advance to the edge of the box and strike low past Vlachodimos for his third goal of the season and first since September 19th.

Sevilla tried to equalize immediately, but after the offside Akor Adams forced a save directly from the Sevilla bench, Betis scored a crushing second goal.

A whipped Fornals free kick from the right flank found Valentin Gomez who flicked the ball to the left side of the box to Sergi Altimira, who took one touch and struck powerfully to hit the top corner of the Sevilla net.

Unsurprisingly, the atmosphere dropped sharply throughout most of the stadium, and the initial signs of debris thrown onto the pitch perfectly captured the frustration of the Sevilla supporters.

Betis managed the final minutes with full professionalism – something that could not be said for Isaac Romero, who was shown a straight red card for cynically fouling Gómez after losing possession to the Betis player.

The match also concluded on an unpleasant note, with fan unrest escalating enough to cause a 15-minute stoppage. However, the rest of the game was a formality, as Betis held firm to secure local bragging rights.

Additionally, Betis have greatly improved their chances of a sixth consecutive top-seven finish, having lost just once in their last 14 away league matches (W6, D7).

Meanwhile, any consequences following the Sevilla fans’ misconduct will be overshadowed by the team’s mood, as Sevilla remain without back-to-back home league wins since October 2024 and could finish the day as close as four points above the relegation zone.
