Coach Xabi Alonso expressed his dissatisfaction with Real Madrid players' performance in the draw against Girona in La Liga’s 14th round.
Real Madrid continued to show inconsistent form recently as they only managed to earn a single point at Girona’s stadium in the 14th round of La Liga.
This was Los Blancos’ third consecutive draw in Spain’s top competition, officially allowing Barcelona to take the lead by one point. During the post-match press conference, Coach Xabi Alonso frankly admitted that Real’s attacking stars failed to capitalize on many clear chances and emphasized that the whole team will strive to improve moving forward.
The Spanish tactician commented: "We played better in the second half, but we lacked precision in the crucial finishing moments. The team is still chasing, and there’s a long way ahead. We need to review why we haven’t been able to control the game better and why we haven’t maintained consistent rhythm.
In reality, we could have turned things around. The team improved significantly after the break and created three to four very clear chances to win. The key now is to remain persistent, as the season still holds many challenges."
Regarding his players’ attitude, Alonso stated: "There is nothing to blame. What matters is that we maintain the unity we have and keep a reasonable self-assessment spirit. Currently, during this intense away match streak, the team has chances to win at Bilbao and regain the winning feeling on the road. The race on the table will definitely see more changes ahead."
During the 90 minutes at Montilivi, Mbappe, Vinicius, and Real Madrid’s attacking stars launched 25 shots towards goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga’s goal, but only one resulted in a score—a penalty converted by Kylian Mbappe in the 67th minute. Meanwhile, the home side Girona, despite being dominated, managed to trouble their opponents with an opening goal by Azzedine Ounahi before halftime.
After securing just one point in Catalonia, Real will travel to the Basque Country to face Athletic Bilbao in round 15.
