FormerDutch goalkeeper Menzo declared his resignation on Sunday after Surinamewere defeated by Guatemala in their final group match in November, which caused them to lose first place to Panama, who secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the US instead.

Nonetheless, Suriname, aided by a fortunate last-minute own goal, qualified for the March inter-confederation playoffs as one of the two best runners-up from the three Concacaf groups and will face Bolivia in the playoff semi-final held in Mexico.

The victors will then compete against Iraq for a spot in the finals.

"I am extremely proud of everything we have accomplished together, and it has been a tremendous honor to be part of this remarkable journey,” said Menzo, 62, in a statement.

“However, I feel that stepping aside is the best choice at this moment.

"I sincerely wish the players, staff, and board happiness, strength, and success as they take this crucial final step in March. This comes sincerely from my heart."

Following the loss to Guatemala, Menzo faced intense criticism from Surinamese media and supporters, who had previously praised the former Ajax goalkeeper.

Suriname has benefited from changes in nationality laws, enabling many Dutch players with Surinamese heritage to represent the team in World Cup qualifiers, greatly improving their chances of qualification.
