Real Madrid closes a bleak November

November was a dark spell for Real Madrid, as Xabi Alonso’s side drew three consecutive La Liga games and surrendered the league lead to Barcelona.

Everything Real Madrid had promised in October evaporated in November, starting after their 2-1 win over Barcelona. From that high of expectation, they descended into a gloomy run where winning became rare and doubts increased with each match.

The numbers don’t lie: just one victory in the last five matches, struggling on both fronts. La Liga, once a foundation of confidence, became a mirror revealing their decline. The top spot slipped away from Real Madrid as a 5-point lead over Barcelona vanished in just four rounds.

November took away points and also the morale that once allowed Real Madrid to dream. Alonso’s team fell apart despite Mbappe continuing to score. Pressing, once a signature during their six consecutive opening wins and a record 10 wins in 11 matches, became disjointed; the lines no longer moved as a unit, and opponents repeatedly disrupted the game’s rhythm.

Inconsistent form in November saw Real Madrid lose the league lead to Barcelona

Last weekend, Real Madrid held more possession against Girona (60%), but it was empty control; impressive stats couldn’t mask the feeling of being stuck. Their passing lacked pace and surprise. November transformed Real Madrid’s sharp play into meaningless touches.

Worse, confidence in the system started to fracture amid criticism of Alonso. When wins didn’t come, small errors became heavy burdens: a late press, a slow pass, an extra half-second on ball control. November’s Real Madrid appeared like a team always half a step behind their opponents.

November was even harsher because it came right after a brilliant October. This contrast amplified the disappointment. From feeling unbeatable, Real Madrid became fragile. The Royal Club lost direction. As everything slowed, the pride that once drove the team also disappeared.

Real Madrid lost the top spot. More dangerously, some players stopped listening to Alonso.
