Gary Neville’s colleague at SkySport, Jamie Carragher, has accused him of damaging McTominay’s career at Old Trafford through excessively severe criticism.
Scott McTominay has been a major disappointment for Man United fanswhile he is currently shining brilliantly for Napoli and regarded as one of the best attacking midfielders in the league. However, during his time at the Red Devils, he never showed such top-level performance.
Recently, Jamie Carragher, a colleague of Gary Neville at SkySport, accused Neville’s harsh criticism of the Man United youngster of ruining his career at Old Trafford.
In a newly posted video on The Overlap’s YouTube channel, Neville questioned: “What happened to Scott McTominay? Did we make a huge mistake?”Carragher immediately responded: “You ended another Man United player’s career. Too much criticism, always saying he wasn’t good enough.”
Neville later rebutted: “I never said he wasn’t good enough… Not me. I never thought they should let him go.”.
Back in 2018, Neville questioned whether McTominay was capable enough to play in Man United’s midfield:
“When I watch McTominay, I’m not sure he’s good enough on the ball to be a Man United midfielder. I think it’s good to give him game time, but sometimes I wonder if he might be better suited as a center-back because of his physique. Does he have enough sharpness in ball control to be a central midfielder for Man United?”.
Neville’s doubts about McTominay’s best position were answered after Man United sold him to Napoli for £25.7 million in the summer of 2024. This decision was strongly opposed by many club legends like Peter Schmeichel and Ole Solskjaer. Even Man United’s head coach at the time, Erik Ten Hag, was unhappy with the deal.
Under Antonio Conte’s guidance, McTominay has transformed impressively into an attacking midfielder. In his first Serie A season, he helped Napoli win the Scudetto, was voted Serie A’s Best Player, and was even nominated for the Ballon d’Or. The Scottish midfielder scored 12 goals and provided 6 assists in 34 Serie A matches last season, quickly becoming a new fan favorite in Naples.
Compared to his time at Man United, McTominay scored only 29 goals and made 8 assists in 255 appearances from 2017 to 2024. Man United surely regret this decision, especially since his replacement, Manuel Ugarte, is performing very poorly at Old Trafford.
