Brighton chairman Tony Bloom faces accusations of running a secret betting syndicate valued at £600 million per year, linked to a sensational football lawsuit at the London High Court.
A lawsuit shaking English football is currently being heard at the London High Court, with Tony Bloom, the chairman and owner of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Clubaccused of orchestrating a covert betting network worth £600 million.
According to The Guardian, court documents spanning 19 pages reveal that George Cottrell held multiple betting accounts actually controlled by Bloom. Cottrell is described as a “front man” for the Starlizard Betting Syndicate, a massive gambling organization believed to be founded and managed by Bloom.
The documents claim Bloom and his associates used Cottrell’s accounts to place widespread bets involving many figures from the sports and business worlds. This group reportedly earned around £600 million in winnings annually. The scandal emerged after Ryan Dudfield, a former associate, filed a lawsuit against Bloom, claiming he was owed £189 million in profits, representing 7% ownership he said was agreed upon in the betting deal.
The court papers also describe Cottrell as “not a lucky gambler,” frequently suffering heavy losses, and having “transferred full control of his betting accounts to Bloom and his team.” Another section indicates that although the group was informed they had stopped using Cottrell’s accounts, betting activities continued, generating “substantial profits.”
Currently, Tony Bloom and his legal representatives have not issued any official statements. Cottrell has also declined to comment on the lawsuit.
It is known that Tony Bloom is one of England’s most famous professional gamblers and poker players, having built much of his wealth from this industry. He took over Brighton in 2009, investing over £93 million to develop the AMEX Stadium and elevate the club from League One to the Premier League, even competing for European competition spots.
While the legal scandal remains unresolved, Brighton is still preparing for a demanding end-of-year match runagainst Aston Villa, Liverpool, Sunderland, and Arsenal.
