Xabi Alonso: 'Real Madrid played their best match of the season'

Real Madrid broke their run of three draws in a row by defeating Athletic Bilbao 3-0. Following the match, coach Xabi Alonso highlighted that the entire squad demonstrated determination, concentration, and perseverance to counter the skepticism they've faced lately.

Appearing calm as usual in the press conference, Alonso chose not to dwell on the controversies or pressure surrounding Real Madrid recently. Instead, he focused on the team’s performance. Alonso said: “Today is about today, and that is what matters most. The collective performance, the quality the team showed, and how we controlled the match steadily—those are the things I will take away. We approach matches one at a time. The schedule is very demanding, not allowing much time to dwell on either good or bad moments.”

The Spanish coach described the victory at San Mamés as one of Real Madrid’s “most complete” performances this season. He affirmed that the team started with thorough preparation and a calm mindset: “We stayed focused for the full 90 minutes, barely leaving any gaps. In the first half, we played very well, created many chances, perhaps this was our most complete match at a tough stadium and at a crucial moment. We managed the game calmly and now must keep it up.”

Kylian Mbappe continued to be the focal point with a brace and a display that the Athletic defense could not handle. Alonso praised his player: “Kylian is in excellent form. Today he scored two fantastic goals. His movement and connection with Vinicius were really impressive. The whole team came out from the first minute to play, to win, with high focus, intensity, and pace.”

Not only did the attack shine, but Real also showed solidity through Thibaut Courtois, who made at least three crucial saves to maintain the team’s lead. Alonso said the Belgian goalkeeper’s performance “was no surprise”: “Nothing unexpected. Thibaut always produces decisive saves, and at key moments, those saves help us hold our advantage and keep pushing the game in our favor.”

With this win, Real Madrid not only regained confidence but also sent a strong message in the title race. Securing three points at San Mamés, a notoriously difficult venue, carries greater significance than a regular victory, especially as they seek to revive momentum after a series of disappointing away results.

Real Madrid will return home this weekend to host Celta Vigo, a match they hope will continue the positive momentum built in the Basque Country.
