Coach Ruben Amorim acknowledged he "does not know" whether Manchester United can hold on in the battle for a top 4 finish this season, yet affirmed that entering the Champions League qualification group within a few weeks is "entirely feasible."
Manchester United has put themselves back into the European race with an impressive run of form: losing only 1 out of their last 7 matches. This performance has brought the Red Devils close to the Champions League places, but the Portuguese coach remains cautious when asked if the team can finish in the top 4.
According to ESPN, Amorim stated in a press conference: “The league table is like that. If there’s an opportunity, if you only have one match per week, you have to take advantage. But when looking at the table, every team is just 1–2 points apart. Everything can change in just a week.”
He continued: “Focus is key. The best way to work, especially with this team, is to only think about the next match. If we win the next game, we will maintain our current position. That is the main goal. Getting into the Champions League spots in the next few weeks is achievable. As for the longer term, I don’t know. I just want the team to remain close to that position next week. What happens after that, we’ll see.”
Man United’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League have also improved with the return of Lisandro Martínez. The Argentine defender came off the bench against Crystal Palace last Sunday, marking his first match after 10 months of knee injury recovery. Martínez is striving to start in the game against West Ham at Old Trafford early on December 5, but Amorim has urged him to be patient.
Amorim said: “Licha has a very strong personality. He’s been out for nearly a year and now wants everything to happen quickly. But we have to manage that and explain to him about the injury.”
“We need to take it step by step. But he is getting more ready and feeling stronger. He will be an important asset to help the team perform better, and I am truly pleased with Licha at this moment.”
According to the schedule, Manchester United will host West Ham at 3:00 AM on December 5 (Vietnam time), before facing Wolves away four days later.
