Malaysia women's national team coach Joe Cornelli has expressed his resolve before facing Vietnam at SEA Games 33.
In the opening match of the women's football event at SEA Games 33, Malaysia's women's team will face a tough challenge when they go up against the reigning champions Vietnam.
At the pre-match press conference, coach Joe Cornelli stated that Malaysia's key players have prepared thoroughly for this tournament, despite having to face top teams right from the group stage (Vietnam, Philippines, and Myanmar). He also praised the strength of the Vietnam women's team but affirmed that his players can still cause an upset in the opening game.
Specifically, the Brazilian coach shared: "Although we must face very strong opponents in the group, we remain confident. Our squad includes some very young players, but we have gained valuable experience through friendly matches, like the win against Bangladesh.
Overall, I am satisfied with our current form, although there are still areas that need improvement. I know Vietnam is a strong team, but I hope we can perform well and maybe even pull off a surprise."
There is no doubt that the Vietnam women's team is considered far superior to Malaysia.
This is clearly shown by Vietnam holding the record with 8 Gold Medals and being the first women's team in the region to win the top title four consecutive times. Meanwhile, Malaysia's best achievement was a Silver Medal at SEA Games 18 held in Thailand in 1995.
In their most recent encounter, the "Golden Girls" also demonstrated their dominance over Malaysia with a 3-0 victory at SEA Games 32, thanks to goals from Hải Yến, Bích Thùy, and Huỳnh Như.
However, in this tournament, coach Mai Đức Chung has shown caution towards the opponent, especially as the level of teams in the region is rapidly improving.
Specifically, he said: "I do not underestimate Malaysia. They have made great progress. This group is balanced, and any team can cause difficulties.
I see women's football in the region is advancing quickly. Not only Thailand and the Philippines, but even Malaysia has invested heavily and strongly. We expect many challenges and absolutely cannot afford to underestimate or be complacent against any opponent..."
The match between Vietnam and Malaysia women's teams will take place at 6:30 PM tomorrow (December 5).
