FC Utrecht filed an appeal with CAS after Olympique Lyon was discovered to have played an unregistered player in their UEFA Europa League fixture on September 25th, a match Lyon won 1-0. Algerian winger Rachid Ghezzal entered the game for Adam Karabec in the 65th minute, despite not being registered by Lyon prior to the start of the UEFA Europa League season.
Following UEFA’s refusal to address the issue, Utrecht appealed to CAS, which has now directed UEFA to commence an investigation, judging that UEFA improperly failed to start disciplinary action.
"FC Utrecht expects UEFA to carry out the mandated duty thoroughly and promptly. The club will keep a close watch on the situation and will provide updates when necessary," the club stated in an official release.
It remains unclear whether UEFA will sanction Lyon, and if so, what penalties might be imposed.
