Following the embarrassment on Sunday at the same venue, FC Nordsjaelland coach Jens Fonsskov Olsen adjusted his tactical setup, opting for a 5-3-2 formation.
Against usual tactics, the visitors let FC Midtjylland control possession in order to strengthen their defense. This strategy held up for around 30 minutes before FC Nordsjaelland's defense completely fell apart.
In the 34th minute, Junior Brumado tapped the ball over the line from close range, and just six minutes and 57 seconds later, the home team had added two more goals, firmly taking command of the game.
FCN’s defensive line was unable to resist the pressure from FC Midtjylland, particularly on set pieces and crosses into the penalty area. Brumado netted his second goal of the night to extend the lead, while his teammate Gue-Sung Cho delivered a powerful header to make it 3-0.
The visitors’ second half began disastrously as Brumado completed his hat trick by scoring a penalty five minutes after the break, making it 4-0.
Peter Ankersen offered the visitors a slight hope by curling a shot into the net from the edge of the box with ten minutes remaining. However, FC Nordsjaelland’s celebrations were short-lived as Mikel Gogorza restored the four-goal margin just a minute later, leaving the visitors with a tough challenge for the second leg.
