The home side started aggressively, but West Ham countered when possible and created the first major chance, as Aaron Wan-Bissaka cut the ball back to Mateus Fernandes who took a first-time shot that Casemiro managed to deflect behind for a corner.

Jean-Clair Todibo and Bruno Fernandes each had attempts blocked at both ends, before Casemiro again intervened to deny Jarrod Bowen, and El Hadji Malick Diouf missed his shot wide without trouble.

Alphonse Areola made the game’s first save in the 25th minute, tipping over a looping effort from Bryan Mbeumo that looked destined for the top corner.

The Hammers barely survived moments later, as Wan-Bissaka clearedJoshua Zirkzee’s shot off the line, Todibo blocked Matheus Cunha’s overhead kick, and Bruno Fernandes shot agonizingly wide.

The home team kept pressing, although Konstantinos Mavropanos and Todibo stopped Cunha and Bruno Fernandes respectively, before Bowen weaved into the Man United penalty area but had his shot saved by Senne Lammens.

Mbeumo had two good chances early in the second half, but Freddie Potts made a crucial challenge to block the winger, and Tomas Soucek held firm when a shot came through, before Luke Shaw sent his shot well over the bar.

Soungoutou Magassa then struck the side netting at the other end, but Man United broke the deadlock just before the hour mark when Casemiro’s shot deflected to Diogo Dalot, who calmly finished.

Casemiro was again alert to block a Potts effort, before Mavropanos was in position to divert Cunha’s shot over the bar.

Andy Irving came on as part of a double substitution and immediately took a corner that saw Bowen’s flick cleared off the line by Noussair Mazraoui, but Magassa was perfectly placed to score his first goal for West Ham and equalise in the 84th minute.

Debutant Mohamadou Kante shot wide and Bruno Fernandes missed twice late on, as the Hammers secured their second draw in three matches, keeping them in the relegation zone.

Man United’s third draw in their last five league matches leaves them in eighth place.
