Diogo Dalot exited the field with injury symptoms right after scoring, causing worry for Manchester United as they continuously drop points and face significant squad shortages.
Manchester United once again went through a tough night by only managing a draw against West Ham, a team near the bottom of the table, in a match where Diogo Dalot—the hero who opened the scoring—had to leave due to injury. Ruben Amorim’s side started slowly but gradually regained rhythm and dominated most of the game.
Dalot’s goal in the second half seemed to give MU a crucial boost, but they failed to finish the game and ultimately dropped two points when Soungoutou Magassa equalized late on.
The most serious issue came from the goal scorer himself. Dalot signaled to the coaching staff that he was struggling physically before being substituted in the 68th minute. Patrick Dorgu, who has faced criticism for inconsistent performances, came on but failed to make a significant impact.
Dalot has been a key player for United this season, appearing in 12 of 14 matches and effectively fulfilling the wing-back role in Amorim’s system. His injury has caused internal concern, especially given the critical shortage of right-backs.
“Dalot tried to signal his injury”journalist Laurie Whitwell commented while analyzing the controversial substitutions made by Amorim. He also mentioned that many of the second-half changes were justified: “Heaven struggled and got booked, Cunha was ineffective, Shaw also received a card. The substitutions were not random.”
However, making up to four defensive substitutions while leading 1-0 was seen by many fans as questionable. They felt Manchester United should have kept pressing to score a second goal instead of retreating to protect the lead.
This dropped point is even more painful as it marks the fourth time in just over a month that United missed the chance to break into the Champions League contention group. Journalist Samuel Luckhurst stated: “A win against West Ham would have lifted Man United to fifth place, but they slipped to eighth after matchday 14. This was a game they absolutely had to win.”
If Dalot faces a long-term absence, Amorim’s system will face major problems. Amad is set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, and Mazraoui is unsuitable for the wing-back role due to fitness and style issues. This makes United’s right flank more fragile than ever.
Given the inconsistent form, shaky attack, and a squad constantly hit by injuries, the worrying signs from Dalot could cost Manchester United dearly in the crucial stages of the season.
