Szoboszlai: 'Liverpool thought the game was over at 2-0'

Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai acknowledged Liverpool’s overconfidence when they were ahead 2-0 against Leeds, only to be pegged back and then lose the lead in the 6th minute of added time, finishing the match with a frustrating 3-3 scoreline.

In the match of the 15th round of the Premier League Slot started Salah and Isak, while Gakpo, Wirtz, and Ekitike were in the starting lineup. After a dull first half with no goals, Liverpool quickly took a 2-0 lead thanks to a brace from Hugo Ekitike early in the second half. However, Leeds rapidly equalized with two goals in the 73rd and 75th minutes.

Then, midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai put Liverpool ahead once again in the 80th minute. Nevertheless, a precise strike from Japanese star Ao Tanaka in the 90+6 minute meant Liverpool could not leave Elland Road with all three points.

Szoboszlai shared on Sky Sports after the disappointing draw in a rather unbelievable way: "I don’t know what happened after we led 2-0. We thought the game was basically finished from that moment. The whole team had said before the match that this is the kind of game where you can never underestimate the opponent. Maybe after the penalty, they gained momentum to bring the game back to 2-2.

At that point, Liverpool responded well to regain the lead, but conceding again from a set-piece is really unacceptable. What happened in the dressing room will stay there and won’t be made public. We have to adjust ourselves and find solutions. Sometimes you have to look inward and ask yourself if you’ve done everything possible. If the answer is yes, then keep going and the wins will come. Last year we were champions; now I’m not even sure where we stand.”

Szoboszlai believes the pressure on Liverpool is increasing as every opponent is determined to beat the champions. This is the toughest challenge Liverpool faces, especially after a busy summer transfer window: “Every team plays well against Liverpool. They all want to beat the champions, and we knew that before the season started. We have to find solutions, show a strong reaction, and everyone must take responsibility when the club doesn’t get good results. Everyone has to step onto the pitch and prove they are ready to fight for this shirt.”
