Coach Arne Slot felt quite bitter, disappointed, and angry as Liverpool squandered a big lead against Leeds and ended up with just one point.
Liverpool took a 2-0 lead at Leeds thanks to goals from Hugo Ekitike early in the second half. However, defender Ibrahima Konate made a mistake that led to a penalty for Leeds. Within minutes, Leeds equalized 2-2 by capitalizing on Liverpool's defensive errors. Later, Szoboszlai scored again to put Liverpool ahead in the 80th minute. Yet, Ao Tanaka sealed a crazy game by tapping in a close-range goal in the 90+6 minute to level the score at 3-3 for Leeds.
Coach Arne Slot made the following comments after this disappointing draw: “This is not the first time we have dropped points this season. Nor is it the first time we have conceded a late goal or from a set piece. Everyone understands the mood in the dressing room right now. I think before going 2-0 up, we barely allowed the opponent any clear chances against Alisson’s goal. The penalty didn’t come from a clear opportunity, but we turned it into one by letting VAR intervene and award the foul.
Then the gap was reduced to 2-1, and their first real chance resulted in the 2-2 equalizer. We still showed resilience to go ahead 3-2. From that point, I believe we controlled the game well. Of course, long balls and aerial duels are not always controllable. That’s obvious. Then, from a set piece in stoppage time, they scored. This is a story that has repeated many, many times this season. But the ones to blame are ourselves, for allowing situations like that to happen.”
Regarding why Mohamed Salah was not started, Slot briefly explained: “It’s never an easy decision because we all know he’s an outstanding player. But I have to choose the lineup I think is necessary for today’s match.”
