In the early hours of December 7 (Vietnam time), Inter Miami entered the 2025 MLS Cup final hosting Vancouver Whitecaps at home. Fueled by passionate home fans and excellent form, the pink-clad team quickly dominated the match.
Messi made his mark quickly. Within the first 10 minutes, he dribbled past two Vancouver defenders before setting up Tadeo Allende in an ideal position. The forward crossed into the box, and Edier Ocampo accidentally scored an own goal, giving Inter Miami the lead.
However, Vancouver mounted a strong comeback in the second half. Inter Miami struggled to contain Emmanuel Sabbi’s runs down the wing, and Canadian international Ali Ahmed capitalized on a mistake by goalkeeper Rocco Rios-Novo to equalize at 1-1 in the 60th minute.
From that moment, Thomas Muller and his teammates appeared to gain the upper hand. Jesper Sorensen’s side controlled 65% of possession. Yet just 10 minutes later, Messi produced a decisive moment.
Displaying his usual cleverness, Messi intercepted the ball in the opponent’s half in the 71st minute before delivering a dangerous pass to De Paul sprinting forward. Facing only the goalkeeper, Messi’s compatriot calmly slotted the ball past Vancouver’s keeper, putting the hosts ahead decisively.
Inter Miami did not stop there. Allende, who entered the match with 8 goals – a playoff record, scored again during stoppage time, sealing a 3-1 win for Javier Mascherano’s team. And once again, Messi provided the assist.
The match also served as a fitting farewell for two legends, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who will retire after this season.
