Chairman David Beckham: 'No one has done what I have done'

David Beckham was overwhelmed with emotion when Inter Miami claimed their first MLS championship after a decisive win against Vancouver Whitecaps.

Inter Miami concluded their historic journey by defeating Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 to lift the MLS Cup for the first time. The young but ambitious team played a proactive final, marking a significant milestone for the fledgling club and helping David Beckham fulfill a long-held dream since founding the club.

The victory came from a mix of luck and determination. An own goal by Edier Ocampo gave Miami the lead, before Ali Ahmed equalized for Vancouver. However, from the middle of the second half, Rodrigo De Paul and Tadeo Allende shone, extinguishing the opponent’s hopes and propelling Miami to the MLS summit amid ecstatic fans.

David Beckham, co-owner since the team’s inception, could not hide his pride. He described this moment as “one of the greatest highlights of my career”, emphasizing that winning as both a player and an owner is an achievement “no one has achieved before.”Beckham affirmed that his MLS dream was realized in the most perfect way following this memorable final night.

Miami’s success over the past two seasons was heavily influenced by Beckham’s vision. They set a record with 74 points in the 2024 season, laying the foundation for rapid progress. Although they didn’t replicate that form this season, the team showed enough resilience to finish as first-time champions. This consistency was evident throughout the key stages of the season.

Lionel Messi’s role cannot be overlooked, as he was the driving force behind Miami’s rise to the top. The Argentine superstar scored 43 goals and provided 26 assists this season, including two assists in the final. Beckham admitted that every effort to bring Messi to the U.S. was completely justified because “we brought the best player to MLS” and today’s success is undeniable proof of that.

Messi is expected to remain the central figure in Miami’s football project for many years. The 38-year-old star recently extended his contract until 2028, starting a new chapter for the club eager to build a true MLS empire. With Beckham in the stands and Messi on the pitch, Inter Miami is showing readiness for ambitious future chapters.
