After losing to Celta Vigo, Alonso acknowledged that Real Madrid is frustrated and chaotic, urging the squad to react right away in their Champions League clash with Manchester City.
Real Madrid entered the match against Manchester City under immense pressure after a 0-2 defeat to Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu. This marked their fifth game without a win in seven matches, leaving them far behind Barcelona and in a state of mental collapse. Facing the media, coach Xabi Alonso could not hide his frustration, repeatedly stressing that the team must change immediately.
Alonso began the press conference with a candid admission: “We are all angry, clearly this was not the match we wanted, nor the result we expected.” He believed Real Madrid lost their spirit very early on, especially after Eder Militao’s injury: “From the start, Militao’s injury gave us a headache. We had to adjust everything.”
The Spanish tactician admitted the team failed to control the game: “We played with good pace and applied pressure, but things didn’t go as planned. The injury and red cards disrupted our strategy.” Real finished the match with only nine players after Fran Garcia and Carreras were sent off. According to Alonso, this left them unable to mount the necessary response.
When asked about the upcoming match against Manchester City, Alonso emphasized it as a chance for the team to shake off the defeat: “We still have the Champions League game with Man City to respond and leave this frustration behind.” He also dismissed rumors about his future being at risk: “We are fighting for three points in the Champions League. We want to perform well and prove that we can do much better than today.”
Alonso did not hesitate to criticize the referee, something rare for him: “We lost our composure because of those decisions. I don’t like how the referee handled things; he made us lose control.”
Nevertheless, he tried to maintain team unity: “We all must look forward. The defeat is painful, but the responsibility lies with everyone, not just one person.”
Alonso shared that having to rotate the squad due to injuries made it hard to maintain stability but believes Real will overcome: “We have to show a different face on Wednesday. With the ambition and pride of this club.”
In the context of Real Madrid’s declining form and mounting pressure, the match against Manchester City is not only a battle for three points but also a test of character for Alonso and the entire team.
