Firing Amorim, a Manchester United legend emerges as an emergency solution

After letting go of Ruben Amorim, Manchester United quickly looked for an interim option, among which a legendary figure from Old Trafford stands out as a noteworthy choice.

Manchester United is entering a turbulent phase after officially dismissing head coach Ruben Amorim. Alongside searching for a long-term manager, the Red Devils’ leadership has compiled a list of interim options to stabilize the squad until the season’s end, considering Darren Fletcher only as a short-term fix.

Ruben Amorim had to leave Old Trafford after 14 challenging months, as his relationship with the club’s upper management deteriorated severely. The breaking point came after the draw with Leeds United, when the Portuguese coach openly expressed dissatisfaction and demanded recognition as “head coach” rather than just “coach,” escalating internal tensions.

Immediately after Amorim’s departure, the search for a new manager began. Several notable candidates appeared on the list, including Oliver Glasner from Crystal Palace, Gareth Southgate, Enzo Maresca recently dismissed by Chelsea, and Unai Emery of Aston Villa. However, while awaiting a strategic appointment, Manchester United remains open to naming another interim coach, similar to the model used with Ralf Rangnick in 2021.

According to British media, Michael Carrick is emerging as the most viable interim option. The former English midfielder has a deep connection with Old Trafford after 12 years playing over 460 matches and winning numerous major trophies.

Carrick previously served as interim manager for Manchester United at the end of 2021, leaving a positive impression by remaining unbeaten in three games, including important wins over Villarreal and Arsenal. Afterwards, he moved to Middlesbrough, leading the team to the Championship playoffs in his first season before being dismissed in June 2025; he is currently available.

Experts warn Manchester United must proceed with extreme caution during this critical period. Former assistant Sir Alex Ferguson, Rene Meulensteen, believes the issue lies not only with Amorim but also with the entire management structure behind the scenes. He stated that the Red Devils need a manager with courage, Premier League knowledge, strong character, and vision to restore the club’s identity. In this context, every decision at Old Trafford now represents a turning point for Manchester United’s future.
