South Korean coach Kim Pan Gon has come back to Malaysia to take on the role of head coach at Selangor FC. Before this, he led the Malaysian national team.
Selangor FC has officially announced the appointment of the South Korean coach Kim Pan Gon as the head coach of their first team competing in the Malaysia Super League.
Accordingly, interim coach Christophe Gamel will continue with the club as the technical director, responsible for building and developing Selangor’s youth academy system going forward.
In the announcement on their official website, Selangor emphasized: “With his extensive experience and proven achievements, Kim Pan Gon is expected to successfully lead the first team and help the Red Giants reach new milestones.”
Speaking on his debut day, Coach Kim Pan Gon expressed his appreciation for Selangor’s supporters: “I truly feel the deep pride and unwavering support from Selangor fans, especially the passionate atmosphere at MBPJ Stadium. That inspired and motivated me to make the decision to come here.”
The 56-year-old coach added that the club’s long-term development strategy was a key factor in his trust: “My decision to join Selangor FC is based on faith in the club’s vision and commitment. Selangor has demonstrated serious investment, strong dedication, and a clear understanding of the philosophy and leadership style I bring.”
Coach Kim Pan Gon led the Malaysian national team from 2022 to 2024. Under his guidance, Malaysian football qualified for the Asian Cup for the first time since 1980 through direct qualification. The most notable was the 3-3 draw against South Korea at the 2023 Asian Cup, a result that made a big impact and earned praise from Asian experts. However, in July 2024, the Korean coach surprised many by suddenly parting ways with FAM despite performing well. Afterwards, he returned to South Korea to coach Ulsan Hyundai FC. This event caused significant controversy at the time.
Selangor’s appointment of Kim Pan Gon is seen as a strategic move, reflecting the ambition to elevate the club not only in results but also in identity and professional direction in the near future.
