VAR was the focal point of dispute at Emirates with Arsenal repeatedly suffering adverse calls, and Manchester United gaining advantage to claim a thrilling win to the dismay of the home supporters.
Arsenal fans couldn't hide their anger at VAR after Patrick Dorgu's contentious goal for Manchester United was allowed, followed by another penalty denial for the Emirates side in the second half.
In the 50th minute, Dorgu unleashed a stunning long-range shot putting Man United ahead. However, after celebrating with the away fans, the 21-year-old midfielder and his teammates had to wait for a VAR review regarding a handball in the preceding play. Specifically, Dorgu controlled a pass from Bruno Fernandes but the ball deflected off his hand, bypassed Martin Zubimendi, and landed in a favorable position to finish.
Nevertheless, after reviewing footage at the Stockley Park center, the VAR team led by Paul Tierney did not advise referee Craig Pawson to check the monitor. The decision to uphold the goal sparked celebrations among the away fans, while Arsenal supporters expressed strong frustration. Many on social media argued that if it had been another team, the handball would have been penalized.
Earlier, Arsenal took the lead through an own goal by Lisandro Martinez under pressure from Jurrien Timber. However, the "Gunners" failed to capitalize on their advantage as Bryan Mbeumo equalized for Man United before halftime following a mistake by Zubimendi.
In the second half, Dorgu again became the spotlight with a goal to extend the visitors' lead. It didn't end there, as Arsenal faced another setback when Mikel Merino's shot was blocked by Harry Maguire's hand inside the penalty area in the 70th minute. The referee ruled that the English defender used his hand to brace himself while falling, so no penalty was awarded. This decision further fueled intense backlash from the home fans.
Although Merino later scored an equalizer amid a chaotic situation, Arsenal were ultimately overwhelmed when substitute Matheus Cunha quickly scored, securing Man United's 3-2 victory.
