Matheus Cunha emerged as Manchester United’s savior with the winning goal that secured a 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates, simultaneously delivering an important message to manager Michael Carrick after the game.
Cunha admitted his strong desire to contribute to Man United following his dramatic late goal against Arsenal. The 26-year-old striker came off the bench and scored the winning goal for the Red Devils against the Premier League leaders.
This was only Cunha’s fifth goal for Man United since his high-profile transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Under the new coach Michael Carrick, Cunha was not in the starting lineup for the first two matches, and he confessed that his only wish was to get playing time.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Cunha said: “I understand the quality of the whole team; everyone wants to play. The most important thing is to help the team, and in every minute I’m on the pitch, I always strive to give my all.”
Regarding the victory over Arsenal, Cunha stated: “Definitely, this is one of the best moments of my career wearing this shirt. Matches like this are exactly what we always dreamt of being part of. When I joined Man United, these were the games we used to watch on TV and always wanted to be involved in. For me, this is one of the most memorable moments here.”
In particular, Cunha expressed pride in Man United’s fighting spirit and affirmed that they defeated “the best team in the world”: “I think we showed the character and strength of the squad. We were fully aware of what to expect when playing away here. Honestly, Arsenal are the best team in the world right now.”
“They have been with coach Mikel Arteta for a long time, fully understanding his tactics and intentions. We knew this would be an extremely tough challenge, but we are Manchester United and our only goal is always to win.”
Following this victory, Manchester United climbed to 4th place in the Premier League standings, surpassing major rival Liverpool. Carrick’s team will aim to extend their perfect start under the new regime next weekend when they host Fulham at Old Trafford.
