Manchester United's consecutive wins over Man City and Arsenal under interim coach Michael Carrick have stirred a heated discussion among football fans in England.
Following the emotional comeback victory of 3-2 against Arsenal at the Emirates, Carrick further improved his impressive record since taking charge at MU. In a short period, the former English midfielder has defeated prominent names such as Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta, Unai Emery, and Thomas Tuchel. With six points from two matches, energetic playing style, and revived fighting spirit, Red Devils supporters have started to question: Is Carrick worthy of the permanent head coach position?
“If you think that just because of those two wins he deserves this job, that’s your opinion and I have the right to have mine, and I don’t believe he is the person who can bring Manchester United back to winning the league. I think even if Manchester United wins every game from now until the end of the season, I still wouldn’t give him this role.”- Roy Keane said after the match.
Roy Keane disagrees. Speaking on Sky Sports, the Irish legend said appointing Carrick as permanent coach at this stage is premature. According to Keane, two big wins do not fully demonstrate a coach’s capability at a club of MU’s stature. He emphasized that even if Carrick wins every game until season’s end, it still wouldn’t convince him.
Keane’s argument is clear: Manchester United needs not just a temporary inspiration, but a coach with enough class, experience, and resilience to lead the team back into the title race for years to come. For Keane, MU’s ultimate goal must be trophies, not just brief moments of brilliance.
This firm stance immediately met opposition from Patrick Vieira. The former Arsenal star believes Carrick deserves a chance, similar to how many young coaches have thrived when trusted at big clubs. Vieira cited Cristian Chivu’s success at Inter Milan as an example that age or experience are not absolute barriers.
However, Keane fired back, saying people tend to remember only a few rare success stories while ignoring many young coaches who failed when given early responsibility. According to him, Manchester United cannot be a testing ground, especially amid numerous challenges in squad quality, tactics, and ambition.
