Australian Open Report: Women’s Singles Quarterfinals Set, Pegula Beats Keys 2-0, Wang Xinyu Eliminated, Plus Today’s Schedule

On January 27th Beijing time, the fourth round of the Australian Open women’s singles began. Four Round of 16 matches concluded today, including an all-American clash where Pegula swept defending champion Keys 2-0. China’s Wang Xinyu was defeated 0-2 by the powerful American Anisimova. Rybakina dominated Mertens 2-0, while Engelis suffered a 0-2 loss to Swiatek. With this, the quarterfinal lineup is complete, and the U.S. emerged as the biggest winner with four players advancing!

Pegula faced Keys in an American derby. Keys, the defending champion, was met with a strong performance from Pegula, who dominated both offense and defense. Keys committed numerous errors, and Pegula won convincingly in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, advancing powerfully to the semifinals. Keys, failing to defend her title, will see a significant drop in her world ranking!

Wang Xinyu took on Anisimova. China’s last hope Wang Xinyu has repeatedly surprised at this Australian Open, reaching the Round of 16 for the first time. In the Round of 16, she faced world No. 4 American powerhouse Anisimova. Wang played very well, pushing the first set to a tiebreak but narrowly lost 6-7. She then took a medical timeout in the second set and fought back to 4-5 but ultimately lost 4-6, falling 0-2 overall. Judging by the match, Wang’s raw strength still lagged behind Anisimova’s, who possesses greater power, stamina, and a fierce serve and return game. Despite missing the quarterfinals, reaching the Round of 16 is Wang’s best Australian Open result to date!

Rybakina faced Mertens. Asia’s top player Rybakina has been on a tear since last year’s China Open, rising rapidly in the rankings to currently hold fifth place. She played with steady form and dominance in this tournament. Against Mertens, she held overwhelming control, unleashing full firepower that left her opponent shattered. Rybakina won comfortably in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, advancing easily to the quarterfinals with a very commanding performance!

Engelis played Swiatek. Engelis advanced to the Round of 16 due to Naomi Osaka’s withdrawal but faced tough luck meeting world No. 2 Polish star Swiatek. Swiatek was relentless, dominating the first set 6-0 with a “bagel.” She continued her assault in the second set, winning 6-3 to complete a 2-0 sweep. Swiatek advanced effortlessly to the quarterfinals, showcasing her ruthless power on court!

The quarterfinal lineup is shown in the image above. According to today’s schedule, two women’s singles quarterfinal matches will take place: top seed Sabalenka vs. 18-year-old American rising star Jovic, and Gauff vs. Svitolina.
