Coach Thomas Tuchel is confronted with a complex problem while assembling the England team for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
After a long period struggling with injuries and uncertainty about his future, Harry Maguire has made an impressive comeback wearing the Manchester United jersey. Since his return in mid-January, the 1993-born center-back quickly became a reliable defender under interim coach Michael Carrick. He played a key role in keeping a clean sheet against Manchester City and delivered an outstanding performance, earning the Man of the Match award in the away game at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium.
This form has sparked lively debates about the possibility of Maguire rejoining the England squad, even potentially participating in the 2026 World Cup, which starts on June 11. On talkSPORT, host Andy Goldstein expressed admiration for Maguire, stating that the defender “must be included in the World Cup squad if he maintains his current level of performance.”
According to Goldstein, England currently lacks many center-backs of high class and consistency. In this context, Maguire’s experience and composure in major tournaments are extremely valuable. The former Manchester United captain has appeared in two World Cups (2018 and 2022), playing a total of 12 matches and earning 64 caps for the Three Lions.
Darren Bent, former England striker, offered a more cautious perspective. Bent believes Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi are the leading options due to their consistent form, while John Stones is expected to return once fully fit. However, Bent also acknowledged that if Maguire remains stable through the end of the season, his call-up would be justified, even if a backup role might make the decision somewhat “awkward.”
In reality, Maguire’s absence from recent call-ups was largely due to fitness issues. Thomas Tuchel openly admitted that injuries were the main reason he hadn’t given Maguire a chance. But now, fully fit and performing impressively, Maguire is emerging as an experienced defensive option for England.
Not only Maguire, but another Manchester United player, Luke Shaw, is also mentioned as a potential candidate for the 2026 World Cup, especially given England’s shortage of quality left-backs. If he maintains his form and fitness, Shaw could well re-enter the competition.
Clearly, with his current form, Harry Maguire is turning doubt into confidence. The final decision rests with Thomas Tuchel, but the 32-year-old defender has sent a strong message that he deserves another opportunity with the Three Lions.
