A change of environment can revive a player’s form. Many footballers struggle in the Premier League, especially at star-draining clubs like Manchester United. Former Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season Onana’s time at United has been disastrous, but the Cameroonian keeper is likely to return to Serie A leaders Inter Milan.
According to the latest reports from the UK’s Daily Mail, the 29-year-old Cameroonian goalkeeper Onana, currently on loan from Manchester United to Turkish side Trabzonspor, is expected to return to Inter Milan this summer. His agent is in talks with Inter, who want to re-sign Onana to replace the 37-year-old Swiss keeper Sommer. Although Onana struggled at Manchester United, his performances at Trabzonspor have been impressive, featuring 15 times in the Turkish Super Lig with 3 clean sheets, helping the team secure third place behind Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe — a very respectable league standing.

Onana’s contract with Manchester United runs until 2028. Due to his high wages and reluctance to remain as a backup goalkeeper, United may have to subsidize his departure. Inter Milan will only re-sign the former Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season if he agrees to a salary reduction. Therefore, Manchester United might offer Onana a compensation package to facilitate his return to Inter, creating a win-win-win scenario for all parties.

Onana graduated from La Masia’s youth academy but never made it to Barcelona’s first team. He later joined Ajax’s youth setup, progressed to their senior squad, and became the Eredivisie’s best goalkeeper. In the summer of 2022, he transferred to Inter Milan on a free transfer. After excelling there, he moved to Manchester United in the summer of 2023 for a €50.2 million fee. However, frequent mistakes led to his being sidelined by Amolen and subsequently loaned out to Turkish club Trabzonspor.
