Ex-Manchester United forward Teddy Sheringham thinks Cristiano Ronaldo could join MLS someday, potentially teaming up with Lionel Messi after his departure from Al-Nassr.
Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham believes Cristiano Ronaldo is fully capable of playing in the MLS in the United States in the future, possibly sharing the same jersey as Lionel Messi. According to the 1999 treble winner, Ronaldo’s fitness and passion for the game allow him to extend his career beyond the age of 42 before considering the “American dream.”
Although approaching 41, Ronaldo still demonstrates remarkable endurance. The Portuguese superstar is currently signed with Al-Nassr until 2027 and has shown no signs of retiring. In the Saudi Pro League, CR7 continues to chase titles, aiming for his third consecutive Golden Boot while maintaining consistent performance for the national team.
Ronaldo is expected to participate in his sixth World Cup with Portugal next summer as captain. He holds numerous international records with 226 caps and 143 goals, numbers that continue to rise. Some even suggest CR7 could still compete in the 2030 World Cup.
Speaking to GOAL, Sheringham said Ronaldo might play until he is 44. “It all depends on maintaining fitness and avoiding injuries. Ronaldo is like a perfectly maintained machine. He’s playing in a league that isn’t too demanding, so he can certainly prolong his career by a few more years,” the former English striker commented.
Regarding his next destination, Sheringham doesn’t believe Ronaldo will return to Europe. He considers the MLS a more suitable option, where CR7 could reunite with his great rival Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami. “I think Ronaldo will choose America, possibly when he is 44 or 45 years old,” Sheringham stated.
At present, Ronaldo is focused on winning trophies with Al-Nassr and approaching the milestone of 1,000 official goals. Sheringham believes Ronaldo’s goal-scoring records are “unbelievable” and unlikely to be matched in modern football. However, to remain a key player for Portugal, Ronaldo must uphold strict standards as coach Roberto Martinez is ready to make tough decisions.
