Benzema’s future shaken by a 'disrespectful' contract offer

Karim Benzema stands at a critical crossroads with Al-Ittihad’s renewal offer being considered inadequate relative to his role and impact.

Karim Benzema has acknowledged significant uncertainty about his future at Al-Ittihad. Ahead of Christmas, the French striker confirmed receiving offers from Europe and stated he would “carefully evaluate everything” before making a final decision. This statement immediately sparked speculation about Benzema potentially leaving the Saudi Pro League after this season.

According to L’Équipe, the root cause lies in Al-Ittihad’s new contract extension proposal. Although the club aims to retain their biggest star, the Saudi team reportedly only offered a renewal with unchanged terms, which Benzema considers “insulting” given his contributions and standing within the squad.

More specifically, European sources reveal that Benzema’s fixed salary of up to 90 million Euros annually risks being completely removed in the new deal. Instead, his earnings would mainly come from image rights. For a player who won the 2022 Ballon d’Or and has been a Real Madrid icon for over a decade, this proposal is viewed as disrespectful.

Benzema’s stance grows firmer as his performance this season remains impressive. The 39-year-old striker has scored 16 goals in 21 matches across all competitions, continuing to lead both on and off the field for Al-Ittihad. According to close sources, Benzema believes the issue is not just financial, but also about dignity and professional respect.

With tensions escalating, Benzema’s departure from Al-Ittihad at season’s end is considered a realistic possibility. If the Saudi side does not revise its stance, the former Real Madrid captain could become a free agent in the summer, opening the door for a return to European football after a year and a half away from the continent.

Nevertheless, Al-Ittihad remains hopeful of keeping the French star. Sporting director Ramon Planes affirmed that Benzema “is motivated to stay” and expressed confidence in the club’s long-term project. However, given the current rifts, Benzema’s future remains uncertain, not only for Al-Ittihad but also for the Saudi Pro League.
