Although 4 U23 Vietnam players were unavailable, coach Nguyễn Thành Công still achieved a win in his first official match with PVF CAND.
PVF-CAND advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2025/2026 National Cup after defeating HAGL 5-3 in a penalty shootout. This victory holds great significance as it marks a positive start for the team under coach Nguyễn Thành Công, despite facing considerable difficulties in squad strength.
PVF CAND lacked the presence of key players who had just played with U23 Vietnam at the 2026 U23 Asian Championship finals including Thanh Nhàn, Xuân Bắc, Anh Quân, while Hiểu Minh suffered a severe injury. The team led by new coach Nguyễn Thành Công had to rely on many unfamiliar names.
The two teams were tied after 90 minutes, forcing a penalty shootout to decide the winner. In the shootout, PVF-CAND showed composure by converting all 5 attempts. Goalkeeper Phí Minh Long shone with a decisive save, helping his team win 5-3 and reach the quarterfinals.
After the match, coach Nguyễn Thành Công said: "The team’s spirit and unity were clearly demonstrated in this game. I’m very happy with this victory. I think the match was even tougher than expected. I’m pleased with the current situation; despite PVF CAND’s limited squad, the players stepping into the starting lineup performed well.
I have limited options regarding personnel. The key players of PVF CAND just served U23 Vietnam. Early results in the V-League were not good, which affected the players’ mentality. In this context, improving the attack is not my primary focus. There are many other issues to consider, which are more important.
I have always taken charge of teams in difficult situations like this. So I’m not afraid to lead PVF CAND. The team’s depth and long-term potential attracted me. If I have a long-term plan here, I want to make PVF CAND a true force."
