Coach Diego Giustozzi thinks Vietnam's futsal team is better off meeting Iraq instead of Indonesia in the quarterfinals.
Before the final group stage match against Thailand's futsal team, Coach Diego Giustozzi assessed that this opponent is very strong. However, his team is confident and relaxed since they have already achieved the goal of advancing past the group stage of the 2026 Asian Futsal Championship.
In the quarterfinals, Vietnam's futsal team will face either Indonesia or Iraq. When asked about his preference, Coach Diego Giustozzi expressed that he would rather face Iraq. “The two teams have very different styles. Iraq has players with good physiques, high technical skills, and strength. Indonesia plays quite similarly to us, focusing on speed, intensity, and direct play.
Currently, Indonesia is one of Asia's strongest teams and will play in front of about 15,000 home fans. Therefore, if given a choice, I prefer to face Iraq, not because of the team's quality—both teams are comparable—but because playing in front of about 1,000 spectators is more favorable than facing the intense atmosphere when playing Indonesia.”, Coach Diego Giustozzi commented.
The match against Thailand's futsal team is decisive for determining the top spot in Group B for Vietnam's futsal team. Before the game, Coach Diego Giustozzi highly praised the Thai team. If Vietnam fails to win against Thailand, they will finish second in the group and will have to face Indonesia in the quarterfinals.
Coach Diego Giustozzi added: “My next goal is to lead the team to the semifinals. I understand this is very difficult because the level among Asian teams is no longer very different. We are a new squad, and our long-term aim is to qualify for the next World Cup.
However, I believe the team has good balance, especially in midfield, and can maintain focus throughout the 40 minutes. With that, we fully have the capability to compete with and defeat the strong teams in Asia.”
