The right-back crisis pushes Liverpool into a rush to adapt, with a packed fixture list and increasing demands for results.
Liverpool must quickly scan the transfer market as the right-back position is disrupted by Jeremie Frimpong’s injury. The coaching staff needs an experienced option to cover the gap before the January deadline, given the intense schedule and the heated Premier League title race.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, during their search, Anfield reached out directly to Inter Milan to inquire about Denzel Dumfries. The two clubs maintain a good relationship, allowing exploratory talks. However, this is only an information-gathering phase, with no formal offer or concrete negotiations yet.
The biggest obstacle is Dumfries’ fitness. The Dutch defender is currently sidelined short-term due to injury and is expected to need one to three weeks to return. For Liverpool, immediate availability is crucial as they need a quick fix for the right side.
Additionally, Dumfries’ release clause only activates in the summer, so Inter is under no pressure to sell in January. Liverpool reportedly considers only a loan deal due to injury risks, but Inter firmly refuses to let a key player go on loan mid-season.
Discussions between the two clubs are also happening while Inter is interested in Curtis Jones, a midfielder developed by Liverpool’s academy. Still, all talks remain preliminary with no parallel negotiation package initiated in the final days of the transfer window.
Dumfries has proven his quality in Serie A with the 2023/24 league title and two Italian Cups, providing energetic presence on the right flank. For Liverpool, January has been relatively quiet after a record summer spending, as the team struggles to regain winning momentum in the Premier League and needs a timely boost in squad strength.
