Brentford caused an upset, VAR led to Aston Villa's heartbreak at home

Aston Villa endured a disappointing 0–1 loss against Brentford on their home ground Villa Park in a thrilling game marked by a red card, VAR disputes, and several squandered opportunities.

Right from the opening minutes, Brentford started stronger. Mathias Jensen tested his luck with a long-range shot, while Dango Ouattara consistently pressured Aston Villa’s defense. In the second half, Aston Villa pushed forward to find an equalizer. A major controversy erupted when Tammy Abraham appeared to score on a rebound, but VAR intervened and disallowed the goal, ruling that Leon Bailey had let the ball go out of play 19 seconds earlier in their own half. This decision sparked outrage among the players and Villa fans.

Unai Emery introduced additional players like Leon Bailey and Harvey Elliott to increase pressure. Matty Cash took a powerful long-range shot but was saved by Kelleher, and Morgan Rogers had some dangerous attempts but lacked accuracy. Nevertheless, Brentford’s defense, especially Sepp van den Berg, remained highly disciplined, ready to block shots to maintain their advantage.
