Pep Guardiola confirms that Man City remains in the Premier League title hunt, even after losing a win against Tottenham and seeing Arsenal increase their gap on the table.
Coach Pep Guardiola emphasizes that Manchester City will not surrender in the Premier League title race, despite the disappointing 2-2 draw with Tottenham last weekend.
Man City started energetically at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, quickly taking a two-goal lead in the first half. Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo scored consecutively, allowing the visitors to control the match and seemingly secure three points.
However, a familiar scenario this season repeated itself for Pep Guardiola's team. After halftime, Man City unexpectedly declined, allowing Tottenham to mount a strong comeback. In the 63rd minute, Dominic Solanke scored a controversial goal after the ball touched defender Marc Guehi’s leg before entering the net. VAR reviewed the incident but still awarded the goal to the home side.
The mounting pressure made it impossible for Man City to maintain the first-half control. In the 78th minute, Solanke stunned City fans again with a spectacular “scorpion” finish from a Conor Gallagher cross, leveling the score at 2-2 and completing an impressive comeback for Tottenham.
This result means Man City, currently second, now trail Arsenal by six points. Pep Guardiola expressed dissatisfaction with the first conceded goal and felt his team was psychologically affected by the referee’s decision. “If a defender did that to a striker, it would have to be a penalty. After that moment, the game’s rhythm was hard to control,”Pep Guardiola said. He even received a yellow card for his strong reaction on the sidelines.
Despite winning only one of their last six Premier League matches, Pep Guardiola still believes the title race is not over.“There are 14 matches left. As long as there is a chance, there is hope. Players are gradually returning from injury, and I see a very positive fighting spirit,” Pep Guardiola affirmed.
Meanwhile, this draw served as a morale boost for Tottenham and their coach Thomas Frank, who has been under pressure recently. With 11 players sidelined due to injuries, Spurs still showed commendable fighting spirit. “We had a fantastic second half. The team is learning to overcome adversity, even with a constantly depleted squad,”Coach Frank stated.
