A former Manchester United legend has unexpectedly advised the club to halt all potential contract negotiations with Kobbie Mainoo.
After a period of being sidelined under Ruben Amorim, Kobbie Mainoo is making a strong comeback under coach Michael Carrick. He has delivered impressive performances, contributing to the Red Devils' consecutive victories. Consequently, news about United resuming contract talks with him has emerged.
However, recently Louis Saha – former United striker – called out the Red Devils to stop all contract negotiations with Mainoo. Speaking to Daily Express, Saha said:
“Stop all extension discussions with Mainoo immediately. I believe these stories only benefit the media and agents. What Mainoo needs to do is score more goals, provide more assists, perform well, and improve. Talking about contracts right now is not good for him. Mainoo is still a young player, even though he has represented England and is aiming for the World Cup. He needs to develop himself.”, Saha stated.
“Why think about contract extensions, leaving the club, or comparing him to McTominay’s career? That’s wrong. A few games are not enough. He needs to score around 10 goals, become a key midfielder alongside Casemiro, and then people will offer him the contract he desires,” Saha added.
Mainoo’s current contract with United runs until summer 2027, with an option to extend for another year. After Amorim’s departure, BBC Sport reported that the Red Devils want to resume new contract discussions with Mainoo and adjust his salary to match key players, affirming his important role in the squad.
Last summer, there were reports that Mainoo wanted to leave on loan to get more playing time ahead of the World Cup, amid interest from Napoli – the Serie A champions.
Nevertheless, Saha believes the club should put new contract talks on hold so Mainoo can fully focus on his performance under Carrick.
Saha scored 42 goals in 124 appearances for Manchester United between 2004 and 2008, winning 2 Premier League titles, 1 League Cup, and 1 Champions League.
