The Malaysian futsal squad suffered defeats in all three games, allowing 17 goals at the 2026 AFC Futsal Championship.
At the 2026 AFC Futsal Championship, Malaysia was placed in Group D alongside tough opponents Iran, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia. These teams were all considered challenging adversaries for the Southeast Asian representative.
In their opening match, Malaysia was defeated 1-4 by Iran. In the second round against Afghanistan, they lost 7-0, resulting in an early elimination. In their final group game, Malaysia faced Saudi Arabia—another team already eliminated. Nevertheless, they suffered another heavy loss with a 1-6 scoreline.
Thus, after three group matches, Malaysia lost all games, conceded 17 goals, and scored 2 goals. Notably, they were the team with the highest number of goals conceded in the group stage. The second most goals conceded was by Kuwait with 13, while Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, Lebanon, and Australia each conceded 11 goals, ranking third.
In reality, Malaysian futsal is still relatively young compared to other continental teams. After the match against Afghanistan, veteran Khairul Effendy of the Malaysian futsal team shared: “Futsal in Malaysia is continuously developing, but I believe we can achieve much more. Currently, the domestic level is quite good, but it could be improved by organizing more matches—either by increasing the number of participating teams or holding more tournaments.”
On the other hand, the eight teams that qualified for the quarterfinals have been confirmed: Indonesia, Iraq (Group A), Vietnam, Thailand (Group B), Japan, Uzbekistan (Group C), and Iran, Afghanistan (Group D).
