Pep Guardiola’s time at Manchester City faces a major turning point, as more reliable sources indicate that this summer could conclude his distinguished chapter at Etihad.

In recent days, the atmosphere at Etihad has heated up with rumors about Pep Guardiola possibly departing Manchester City after many years. Although his contract runs until summer 2027, signals from inside the club and experts suggest the prospect of a farewell is clearer than ever.

According to Sky Sports, Manchester City’s management has begun preparing succession plans, a rare move that typically wouldn’t happen if the head coach’s future was truly secure.

Journalist David Ornstein from The Athletic also confirmed these speculations are no longer baseless rumors. He revealed: “We are hearing clearer indications than ever before about the possibility of Pep Guardiola leaving at the end of the season.”

Ornstein noted that although Guardiola signed a two-year deal, many within Manchester City believe it was only a temporary fix. He added: “Even at the highest levels within Man City, there was an expectation that this was effectively a one-year contract, intended to reduce pressure and scrutiny during this season.”

However, that plan seems to have lost its effect as the team’s form and atmosphere show signs of instability.

Doubts increased when news surfaced that Man City has contacted potential candidates. Enzo Maresca — who previously worked at Etihad and is highly regarded — is said to have held talks with Man City representatives. Ornstein emphasized: “There is a strong feeling in the industry that Maresca will be a key figure if a change happens this summer.”

Besides Maresca, several other notable names have emerged as possible successors. Ornstein commented: “It would be a mistake for a major club like Man City not to consider Xabi Alonso.” Additionally, Cesc Fabregas, known for his impact at Como, and Vincent Kompany, who is doing well at Bayern Munich, are also seen as potential options, each bringing their own philosophy and style.

From a fan’s perspective, anxiety mixed with acceptance is evident. Manchester City supporter Rachel Herdson shared on BBC Radio 5 Live: “It’s hard to guess what Pep is thinking, but his body language suggests this could be his final season.”. She also believes the management already has a succession plan and affirmed: “He will always be a legend, and we want Pep to leave as a legend.”

Guardiola himself has never fully dismissed the possibility of leaving. His fatigue during press conferences and reluctance to make clear commitments have fueled public belief that a major decision may come this summer. Ornstein concluded: “No one can be 100% certain, but the chances of Pep Guardiola leaving Man City at the end of the season are very high.”
