The Thai futsal squad was officially eliminated following a 2-4 defeat against Iraq. This outcome quickly triggered intense responses from fans across Southeast Asia.
Entering the quarterfinal match, Thailand started proactively and created several threatening chances. However, Iraq was more effective in seizing opportunities. In the 7th minute, from a textbook counterattack, Iraq took the lead 1-0. Nevertheless, Thailand showed resilience by responding immediately. At the 9th minute, Osamanmusa was in the right place to tap in a close-range shot, leveling the score at 1-1. The first half ended with a 1-1 draw.
In the second half, the scenario quickly turned unfavorable for Thailand. In the 22nd minute, Iraq launched a sharp counterattack, with Mustafa finishing decisively to make it 2-1. Minutes later, Thailand's defense slipped again, allowing Salim Kadhim to extend the lead to 3-1. The real shock came in the 37th minute when Iraq's goalkeeper Ibrahim caught Osamanmusa’s shot and immediately kicked the ball from his own half; it rolled slowly but precisely into the empty net, increasing the score to 4-1. Thailand’s late efforts only earned a consolation goal in the final 24 seconds by Sriarwut (2-4). Final score, Thailand lost 2-4 and was officially knocked out of the tournament.
Right after the match, social media exploded with numerous comments from regional fans. Indonesian supporters remarked: “There were many complaints from the Thai fans when their team played at the Velodrome, but it was at the Indonesia Arena that their true level was revealed. The Thais seem to think they are Argentina.”
A Thai fan commented: “Our journey ends here. Thailand still has a lot to work on and needs to keep training.”
Notably, a Malaysian supporter encouraged: “Come back stronger, Thailand. I believe Thailand is going through a generational transition, while neighboring countries like Indonesia and Vietnam are progressing well with their young talents.”
Meanwhile, Vietnamese supporters shared: “Thailand remains the leading futsal nation in Southeast Asia. This loss is just a setback as they prepare for stronger advances ahead. Wishing you a swift return to continue delivering exciting matches in the region.”
Previously, in the first quarterfinal, Iran demonstrated overwhelming strength by defeating Uzbekistan 7-4, confidently advancing to the semifinals. Meanwhile, the quarterfinal match between Indonesia and Vietnam's futsal teams will take place at 7 PM on February 3rd.
