Manchester City easily overcame Newcastle 3-1 in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg, thus booking their spot in the final with a commanding 5-1 aggregate after both legs.
In the early hours of February 5 (Vietnam time), Manchester City hosted Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg. At home, Pep Guardiola’s squad continued to show their superior strength by winning 3-1, concluding the tie with a 5-1 aggregate score over two legs.
Despite rotating the squad again, Man City dominated from the opening minutes. The one-sided match quickly materialized with two swift goals from Omar Marmoush. The Egyptian forward took advantage of Newcastle’s defensive lapses to finish neatly on both occasions, putting the home team ahead and almost deciding the outcome within the first half.
Not stopping there, Tijjani Reijnders added a third goal with a cool finish inside the box, completing Man City’s efficient display before the break.
On the other side, Newcastle struggled greatly to build their play. The rare bright moments for the visitors in the first half were individual efforts and long-range shots, all denied by James Trafford. Man City’s goalkeeper made two outstanding saves, prolonging Eddie Howe’s team’s miserable away run against the Sky Blues.
In the second half, Newcastle showed improvement after personnel changes. Their reward came just after the 60th minute when Anthony Elanga scored a stunning solo goal to reduce the deficit. This was Elanga’s first goal for Newcastle since joining the club for a significant fee from Nottingham Forest.
However, Man City deliberately slowed the pace to conserve energy for the upcoming final. Pep Guardiola still brought on Erling Haaland and Rodri to maintain stability and apply late pressure. Haaland came close twice but was unable to increase the lead.
In the end, Man City won 3-1 and proudly advanced to the Carabao Cup final, where they will face Arsenal at Wembley — Guardiola’s 22nd visit to the iconic English football venue since managing Man City.
