A major upset at the Table Tennis Asia Cup: Round of 16 set & Sun Yingsha wins 3-0, Wang Yidi falls 1-3 to Miyu Nagasaki

On February 5th Beijing time, the group stage of the Table Tennis Asia Cup pressed on. Recently finished were two matches, including the unexpected 1-3 defeat of Chinese world champion Wang Yidi by Miyu Nagasaki, which stunned many. Meanwhile, world No.1 Sun Yingsha kept her momentum, sweeping Batra 3-0 to secure her second straight win, thus clinching the first spot in the round of 16!

Wang Yidi faced Japanese player Miyu Nagasaki. As a key member of the Chinese team, Wang Yidi has struggled in international matches, frequently losing to various opponents. This round’s opponent, Miyu Nagasaki, is also a very aggressive player, putting considerable pressure on Wang. From the start, Wang appeared sluggish, dropping points easily while Nagasaki dominated the first game 11-3. In the second game, Wang improved and exchanged fierce rallies with Nagasaki but narrowly lost 9-11, falling to 0-2 and on the brink of elimination. Facing a must-win situation in the third game, Wang fought back to build a lead and held off her opponent’s attacks to take it 11-8, saving a match point. However, in the fourth game, Wang collapsed again under Nagasaki’s relentless offense, scoring only 3 points and losing quickly 3-11. The final score was 1-3, an upset defeat for Wang Yidi, who continues to show inconsistency and frequent failures in international competition.

Sun Yingsha took on Batra. This Asia Cup marks Sun’s first event of the new year and she is among the favorites to win the title. In the group stage opener, she won decisively 3-0 against Ye Yitian. Her second match was against India’s Batra, known for a unique playing style and having previously beaten top Chinese players. However, Sun was unfazed, displaying powerful offense and easily countering Batra’s attacks. She swept the match 3-0 with scores of 11-5, 11-6, and 11-8, confidently securing her second win and early qualification to the round of 16.

It must be said that Sun Yingsha is extremely consistent and the most reliable in international matches. This is the true strength of the world No.1, able to calmly handle any opponent. Congratulations to Sun Yingsha on advancing to the round of 16!
