Carrick's 'genius' decision sparks a strong revival for MU

The changes in Carrick's routine and training timetable are yielding encouraging results for MU, with the squad enhancing performance and narrowing the distance to the top Premier League teams.

Michael Carrick is gradually making his mark as Manchester United's head coach by altering the weekly training schedule. Players now get a day off immediately after each match, instead of attending recovery sessions as was the case under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. This adjustment aims to reduce both psychological and physical strain on the squad.

Previously, Ten Hag and Amorim consistently held recovery sessions the day after matches. Even players who played less than 45 minutes had to undergo full training sessions. While this approach was praised for discipline, it also placed significant pressure on players amid a congested fixture list.

Carrick grants the team a day off the day after matches; recovery sessions only take place when players return to the Carrington training center later. The English coach has shortened daily training durations but increased intensity within each session. The goal is to keep players in peak condition while ensuring tactical and physical effectiveness. Carrick's bold decision has revitalized MU, contributing to three consecutive wins and pushing the club firmly into the Premier League’s top four.

Besides changes to the training schedule, MU now focuses more on individualized training programs. Former defenders Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans have been assigned to work specifically with the central defenders to enhance defensive techniques. The club has also altered matchday routines, arriving at Old Trafford later than before.

Historically, MU managers have held different views on player rest days. David Moyes and Louis van Gaal were willing to call the team for training even on rest days if results were poor, whereas Jose Mourinho maintained fixed rest days. Under Carrick, MU will have a Sunday off before facing Tottenham, aiming for a fourth consecutive victory.
