Coach Mauro confirms that Xuân Son’s absence from the registration list is due to disciplinary card considerations, not health issues.
Although currently in excellent form and highly anticipated before the crucial match against Johor Darul Ta'zim, Xuân Son was unexpectedly left out of Nam Định Club’s registered squad for the match on the evening of February 5 at Thiên Trường Stadium. This news surprised both experts and fans alike, as the naturalized Vietnamese striker was regarded as the main highlight of the “mini Vietnam Malaysia” showdown at the Shopee Cup.
Before kickoff, Xuân Son was expected to lead Nam Định’s attack in this key encounter against the Malaysian representative. The 1997-born forward tops the scoring chart with 7 goals, playing a crucial role in helping Nam Định secure an early semifinal spot and compete for the top position in Group B. His consistent performance, ability to break through defenses, versatile finishing, and international experience make Xuân Son a “strategic card” for Coach Mauro Jeronimo in important matches.
Explaining the decision not to use striker Nguyễn Xuân Son in this match, Nam Định’s head coach stated it was a deliberate strategy for the upcoming stages. According to him, Xuân Son is always eager to play in every match, but since Nam Định has already secured a semifinal berth, the coaching staff needed a cautious approach.
“Xuân Son has received two yellow cards in the group stage. If he gets another, he will be suspended for the first leg of the semifinals. Therefore, the club chose the safest option,” Coach Mauro explained, adding that the other players have fulfilled their assigned roles well.
Coach Mauro’s explanation relieved Vietnamese football fans. Previously, Xuân Son’s omission raised concerns that the naturalized striker might have health problems. Although he has been in good condition and performing explosively recently, Nam Định remains cautious with Xuân Son to avoid unnecessary risks before the knockout stage and the demanding schedule ahead.
