The iconic saying “Lads, it’s Tottenham” used to represent the self-assurance and authority of Manchester United during Sir Alex Ferguson’s era.
However, in nearly the past three years, that slogan has turned into a genuine nightmare for Manchester United every time they face Tottenham. The cold statistics reveal that the Red Devils have lost their standing against their North London rivals.
Since their 2-0 victory in October 2022, Man United has not beaten Tottenham even once. That match is also remembered for Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Old Trafford early after being benched, a moment seen as a turning point in the relationship between the Portuguese superstar and coach Erik ten Hag. Since then, Man United’s luck against Spurs seems to have vanished.
Man United’s eight-game winless streak against Tottenham has spanned multiple Spurs managers, from Ryan Mason and Ange Postecoglou to Thomas Frank. Notably, Spurs ended their trophy drought by defeating Man United in the Europa League final, delivering a harsh blow to the pride of Old Trafford.
The 2-2 draw at Tottenham’s ground last November marked a significant low point for Man United. Despite taking the lead twice, the Red Devils failed to maintain their advantage and only avoided defeat thanks to a late equalizer by Matthijs de Ligt. That match also intensified the pressure on Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed shortly afterward.
Poor performance was the main reason Amorim lost his position. In his last 11 matches in charge, Man United managed only three wins, alongside disappointing results against West Ham, Wolves, and a loss to Everton despite having just 10 players. The image of a resilient and determined Man United has almost disappeared.
Notably, the last time Man United defeated Thomas Frank was during Erik ten Hag’s tenure, when the Dutch manager was still in charge. Frank made a strong impression while leading Brentford and was even interviewed for the Man United manager position before the 2024 FA Cup final. However, the Red Devils’ board chose not to place their trust in him.
Will a resurgent Man United under Michael Carrick’s interim leadership break their winless streak against Tottenham, or will the Red Devils once again drop points to the London side? The answer will come after 90 minutes at Old Trafford this weekend.
