Manchester United's attempt to approach a coach who has won the Champions League failed as the manager prioritizes stability and ambition at his current club.
According to the UK’s Mirror, Luis Enrique is not keen on the prospect of taking over Manchester United next summer. Despite being one of the top candidates for the head coach position at Old Trafford, the Spanish strategist prefers to continue his long-term, stable project at Paris Saint-Germain.
One of the reasons Enrique remains unconvinced is the development direction of Manchester United. There are still many internal issues within the Manchester club regarding transfer strategy, management structure, and operational stability. Enrique reportedly does not hold the “project” at Old Trafford in high regard, as he seeks an environment with clear alignment between the coaching staff and upper management.
Additionally, the possibility that Manchester United will not qualify for next season’s Champions League is a significant factor. For a coach accustomed to working at the highest level in Europe, Enrique is cautious about leading a team absent from the continent's most prestigious club competition. This is considered a crucial criterion in his choice of the next destination.
In contrast, PSG has begun contract renewal talks with Luis Enrique, aiming to keep him at Parc des Princes until 2030. The Spanish coach is negotiating directly with Sporting Director Luis Campos on new terms. Their strong relationship facilitates positive progress in the discussions, laying a stable foundation for the long-term project in Paris.
Enrique’s decision is seen as a blow to Manchester United's owners' ambitions, especially since Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly a great admirer of the coach. In this context, Michael Carrick is currently acting as interim manager and could become a candidate if he helps United qualify for the Champions League, alongside other options like Thomas Tuchel or Carlo Ancelotti.
