Coach Mai Đức Chung discussed the objectives for the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup Finals and looking ahead to the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
Although the loss to the Philippines in the SEA Games final last December on penalties was disappointing, the tournament gave the coaching staff a chance to evaluate young talents like Ngọc Minh Chuyên and Nguyễn Thị Kim Yên.
“To reach a truly high level, our country must build a broad and solid training foundation. Only then can we achieve good results,” emphasized Coach Mai Đức Chung. “The SEA Games are regarded as an important opportunity to continue strengthening and preparing, especially during the team’s youth renewal phase.”
At the upcoming AFC Women’s Asian Cup Finals, Vietnam’s women’s team is placed in Group C alongside Japan, India, and Chinese Taipei. According to AFC’s assessment, Vietnam has a good chance to compete for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Speaking about their goals for the continental tournament, Coach Mai Đức Chung said: “This time, we have set very high targets and are determined to give our best effort,” Coach Mai Đức Chung affirmed. “Of course, there are many strong teams like Australia, Japan, North Korea, and South Korea.” He also identified direct competitors: “Additionally, there are teams such as Iran, Chinese Taipei, and Uzbekistan,” he added.
Notably, the Asian Cup Finals will also serve as the qualification tournament for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. Specifically, the four semifinalists will advance to the World Cup, while the four quarterfinal losers will compete in playoffs for the last two spots.
“Our goal is to work together as a united team, maintain strong determination, and overcome all difficulties. We hope the national women’s football team can secure a World Cup spot once again,”Coach Mai Đức Chung confirmed.
