Following the 2-0 win against Tottenham, interim manager Michael Carrick showed contentment yet stayed level-headed, even as he and Manchester United have been unbeaten since he took over the team.
On the evening of February 7, Manchester United defeated Tottenham at Old Trafford in a match where the "Red Devils" controlled the game better after the opponents were reduced to 10 men. When the final whistle blew, Carrick was loudly cheered by the stands—a rare sight for an interim manager.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Carrick admitted that playing against a team with one less player was not straightforward: “When the game turns into 10 versus 11, there are always risks involved. The first half was quite open, Tottenham performed well, and we had to make adjustments. But in the second half, the team managed the match well, constantly pushing for a second goal, and once that happened, the game was essentially decided.”
The English coach also praised the effectiveness of set pieces, crediting the entire coaching staff, including Jonny Evans, for their efforts paying off: “The opening goal was hugely significant. It highlighted how important dead-ball situations are in tight matches.”
Notably, Carrick did not hold back in praising Bruno Fernandes, who continued to make an impact by scoring despite playing in various roles: “He is a player for the big moments. Bruno always puts the team first and has brought immense value since his arrival,” Carrick emphasized.
However, when asked about the race for the top four and beyond, Carrick immediately applied the brakes: “Not right now. Fans have the right to dream and get excited—that’s why they come to the stadium. Our job is to provide that emotion, but the team must stay focused and build step by step.”
Closing the interview, Carrick admitted he is enjoying the current moment: “This is a fantastic role. Everything is happening naturally, but we won’t let ourselves get carried away by emotions.” A statement enough to give MU fans hope, yet also showing Carrick’s cautious approach amid the winning euphoria.
The victory over Tottenham helps the Red Devils maintain their 4th place in the league standings, just three points behind second-placed Man City, while Tottenham slipped to 14th following a disappointing performance.
