Rio Ferdinand has urged Manchester United to change their stance so Casemiro does not depart Old Trafford on a free transfer this summer.
Michael Carrick helped MU secure their fourth straight Premier League victory after the team defeated Tottenham 2-0 at Old Trafford on the evening of February 7. Casemiro was one of the standout performers for Manchester United.
Witnessing the outstanding display by the former Real Madrid star, Rio Ferdinand spoke out to call on MU to reverse their decision regarding Casemiro. Previously, MU confirmed that the 33-year-old midfielder would leave Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of the season.
“Casemiro… the game has left him behind, he should have left the stage before the stage left him,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel. “Listen, where is he going to go? He needs to sign a new contract. We have to act now: Casemiro, give him a new deal and say, ‘Alright, one more year’.”
“Because we will have to go out and find a replacement, and given his current form, if we want to replace Casemiro the way he’s playing under Michael Carrick, it will cost us a lot of money,” Ferdinand added..
Ferdinand also believes MU should wait until the end of the season before making a final decision on Carrick’s future but feels the former teammate is “building a very strong case” to stay at Old Trafford.
“I know many are asking if Carrick should be given the permanent Manchester United manager role – it’s getting harder to say ‘no’ now,” Ferdinand said. “With the way he’s winning, it’s difficult to say: ‘I don’t think he should get the job, I don’t think he has enough experience, this is a role for ex-players, does he have what it takes to be a manager?’… Things will prove themselves,”he added.
“No, I wouldn’t give him the job right now. I know Michael, having played with him for many years, growing up together at West Ham, he’s one of my closest friends in the squad. But I can sit here and say honestly: I don’t think he should be handed the position at this moment,”the English defender affirmed.
“Let him finish the season, then review and make a decision. But wow, he’s presenting a very convincing argument to be given the job and a contract. Hopefully, that continues,” Ferdinand added.
